Often when we think of opera we picture static singers delivering monumental works to an immobile audience. But this image obscures opera's dynamic past. In the nineteenth century, works and performers crossed oceans to reach brand new audiences, and virtuoso instrumentalists recreated entire operas outside of the theatre. Opera was on the move! This session will explore ways that opera moved, literally and figuratively, away from and within 19th century Europe. From French opera presented on a grand scale in New Orleans to Italian retellings of operatic love stories by single instrumentalists, opera was reimagined in many different and surprising ways.
